On 9 November 2013, a graduation ceremony was held at the Hong Kong Sports Institute (HKSI) for a batch of local coaches and athletes who graduated from the prestigious Beijing Sport University (BSU). The ceremony was officiated by Professor Huang Zhu-hang, Dean of BSU Continuing Education College, Mr Johnathan McKinley JP, Deputy Secretary for Home Affairs, and Dr Trisha Leahy, Chief Executive of the HKSI.
Offered by BSU and administered by HKSI since 1999, the programme aims to provide professional development for coaches and athletes in order to develop high-quality coaches for Hong Kong sport. The five-year, part-time programme consists of 25 modules, which include both theory and practicum.
The qualification, a Bachelor of Education in Sports Training, is equivalent to a degree in the Mainland China and is widely recognized by countries such as United States, Canada, and Australia.
This year's graduating class was the fourth batch of graduates from the programme. So far, 69 coaches and athletes have graduated from the programme. Six of this year's graduates, who started in 2008, are wushu elite athletes, namely Cheng Chung-hang, Leung Ka-wai, Leung Man-chun, Tang Siu-kong, Yuen Ka-ying and Zheng Tian-hui.
The graduates were excited to have completed their five years of hard work and were happy to have their families and friends witness this valuable moment.
In his speech at the graduation ceremony, Professor Huang Zhu-hang, Dean of BSU Continuing Education College, offered thanks to the HKSI for its efforts, to the lecturers for their hard work and patience, and to the graduates for their persistence and dedication. He encouraged the graduates to continue with their good learning spirit, and to spread the BSU spirit of persistence in training and in the pursuit of excellence.
During the graduation ceremony, which was attended by about 200 guests, six scholarships were presented to outstanding students.
